Theme

A theme is what unifies the yearbook from front cover to back. It is carried throughout the visual and verbal design, and should be implemented into all key elements of the yearbook.

Selecting and succesfully implementing a theme into your yearbook is difficult to pull-off without appropriate thought and planning.

More than just a title

The theme is more than just the yearbook title. It is an accompanying concept that sets the tone of this year's yearbook edition.

More than just a design

Yearbooks should ideally incorporate a consistent design and not present itself like a random collection of pages. A theme provides a specific reason for the design to appear the way it does.

Using certain design elements may look pretty, but the theme should be driving all visual and verbal design elements.

Developing the theme

A good theme is unique, natural, and appropriate to school this year. Develop ideas for your theme by listing:

  • things that make the school different, unusual and unique this year
  • changes in school policy, buildings and facilities
  • trends that affect students
  • milestones that the school celebrate this year
